Quick apron tutorial

Okay for those of you who want to make quick and easy aprons for the kids here's how I do it. I buy 1/2 a yard of higher material than cotton (to make it last longer). I than cut out this pattern shape myself , from chest top to bottom is 20" in length for I would consider 3 to 7 yr olds. The width I chose to do is 15 1/2". As you can see I make most of my patterns myself from newspaper because that's how my mother and grandmother (a seamstress) taught me how to do it.
Than for the 3 straps I cut them about 20" in length and whatever width you want depending on the type of style of stitch you want to use. For the pocket I just make another pattern 5 1/2 " wide and 20" in length to match the bottom of the apron body.
Your first step: is to sew the pockets top part over, my seam allowances tend to be anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" because of my quilting background I'm comfortable with that. Most pattern books call for 1/2" allowances.
The second step: is to sew the pocket onto the bottom part of the apron, I do it one way but you can do it any way you would like it. I put the pocket right side bottom to the wrong side of the apron bottom. Stitch only across the bottom this way than flip the pocket over and the pocket will cover the front of the apron body perfectly.
The third step: is to sew along the edge of the entire apron body 1/2" under including the pocket at the sides.
The fourth step: is to sew the straps how you like them to look for finishing purposes, than attach them one at each side and one will go at the top for the neckline.
The final step: (optional) is making the pocket into more than one big opening. I typically will make it two to three pockets to carry things in for the kids.

Other options for creativity purposes, if you have a solid color apron body use a cotton patterned piece for the pocket, neck strap, and a little decorative piece at the top (as I've posted previously). Another one is using two different patterns (stripes with circles for example). Really you can do whatever you want, I've even let the kids pick the main body part and that is typically quite loud in pattern that I'll go with a solid color for the pocket and straps for contrast. Sorry it's such a short and not enough photos for a tutorial but hopefully you get the idea otherwise feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks for the apron tutorial! I've been looking all over for a toddler's chef apron--and no one seems to have them! Can't wait to make one...and save a buck too.

Thanks for still having the post up. I am looking for a toddler apron tutorial to make for some kids. Not sure if I'll be able to make them in time for the party but definitely will make one for each of my kids.

Do you worry about the grain of fabric? It looks like you laid your pattern on the fabric sideways. Is that right?

I place the fabric so it has stretch ability from side to side around the childs body. I don't remember about this particular fabric I used but it was heavy woven material for covering outdoor furniture.

Thank you Melissa.

I'm eager to try this for my nephew for Christmas. I was just wondering about the measurement at the very top of the apron...and how far you drop down to create the curve around the chest.

Cute - and very easy - thank you! One questions - Do you have a picture of the finished product? I've got a 4 year old and a 2 year old (girls) that want aprons and I've only made them large enough for myself in the past.
